Ordinances

Water baptism and the Lord’s supper are not an ordinances for the church.

You’ve heard of the phrase “the city ordinances”. These are the rules and regulations given by a city council to maintain order and proper behaviour.

Now the Corinthian church was way out of order. Baptists would have us believe that regular observance of water baptisms and taking of the Lord’s supper, would correct them. No, when Paul mentions ordinances he says …and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 1 Cor 11:2 This is past tense.

When you read First Corinthians, you will see that Paul gave them dozens of rules and regulations to bring order back into the church.

Put it this way, why would Paul say For Christ sent me not to baptize (water), but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 1 Cor 1:17, if he was giving the church water baptism as an ordinance? He wouldn’t!

The great danger of having water baptisms in a church, is that people assume that because they have been water baptised then they must be saved.
