Right from
the “Get-Go” … around 830 BC,
in the Book of Joel, the ‘first’ of Israel’s 16 prophets … there being
4 major
ones and 12 minor ones, God declares his future plans for Israel and
all the
nations of the world.
EXPLANATION:
Following
are the scriptures for numbers 1, 2
and 3
1. (THE) GREAT
TRIBULATION Joel 2:28-32
28 And it shall come to pass
afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream
dreams, your
young men shall see visions:
29
And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids
in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30
And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood,
and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into
blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
32
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the
name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in
Jerusalem
shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom
the LORD
shall call.

I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will
drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the
east sea,
and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink
shall come
up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done
great
things. Joel 2:20
JOEL
Along with invading armies, leprosy and locusts
were the cause of absolute terror to the Jew, with leprosy bringing
personal
physical destruction in the form of an ‘incurable’ disease, while
locusts
brought a national starvation calamity.
Joel opens his account, with the devastations brought
about by locust eggs, pupae, caterpillars and adults, each signifying
the successive
stages of the destruction of crops, that is, symbolic of
the
successive stages of the destruction of Israel.
Since the creation of the two kingdoms, Northern and
Southern in 930 BC, there had been a rapid decline in the moral
condition of
Judah (the Southern tribes), which had culminated in their almost
complete
eradication, thanks to the Northern “locust queen” called Athaliah,
inter-marrying into the Southern line. Like the locust in the natural,
she had
‘eaten’ and ‘consumed’ with murder, all the kings, and their families,
of the
South, except for a little boy called Joash, the future king,
who was
kept hidden in the temple for six years.
So it is with the analogy of the locust, that Joel,
the first of the prophets, calls Judah to attention just after Athaliah
was
killed around 830 BC.
One cannot imagine a blacker description of
hopelessness and devastation than Joel with his fire, virgins
mourning,
beasts groaning, no food or drink, corrupt priests, invading armies,
rivers
dried up, no pastures, thick darkness, withered corn, rotten seed,
drunkenness,
chariots, dark moon, desolate wilderness, the coming day of the Lord,
withered
trees, the flame of fire and stubble, pain, the sword and so on.
The solution? A solemn assembly of mourning and
fasting.
Joel’s account is divided into several parts,
with the first from Joel 1:1 – Joel 2:17, the second from
Joel 2:18 the third Joel 2:28-32, the fourth Joel 3:1-3 Joel 3:15, the fifth Joel 3:16-21.
His account covers about 3,000 years from 930BC to the
seven year tribulation and Armageddon.
WAS PENTECOST
THE DAYS OF JOEL? Acts 2:16
“But
this
is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel” Acts 2:16.
Let’s
compare the two accounts:
1. I will pour out my
spirit upon all flesh; … your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream
dreams, …
young men shall see visions. And also upon the servants
and
upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. Joel
2:28-29 NONE OF THIS HAPPENED AT
PENTECOST!
2. … wonders in
the heavens … in the earth… blood
… fire … pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness … moon
into blood
Joel 2:30-31. NONE OF THIS HAPPENED AT PENTECOST!
3. … before the great &
the terrible day of
the LORD come. Joel 2:31. WAS PENTECOST A TERRIBLE
DAY? NO!
4.
Joel is
foretold for the day of the LORD. This is the seven
year wrath of God. This is the tribulation.
5.
…whosoever
shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered:
(Joel 2:32). They weren’t being delivered at Pentecost! However, if
they
would call on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38), they would be
saved.
In
Joel they will call upon the LORD who is Jehovah. At
Pentecost, they call on the Lord who is Jesus. Also,
Pentecost
was voluntary. Joel is forced upon Israel. It will be a
mandatory
deliverance.

….for in
mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be
deliverance, ... and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. Joel
2:32. Pentecost was not about a remnant being
delivered.
7. Joel does not talk
of anyone
speaking in tongues, of rushing wind or cloven
tongues of
fire.

The Spirit is never poured out anywhere in the New Testament upon
any flesh. However God’s Spirit touches the flesh, when a person is
born again
(Col 2:11-14), in that, the soul is cut from the flesh in a spiritual
circumcision that separates the soul from the body of flesh.

The Jews at
Pentecost knew they were not
in the last days. These two events are separated by 2,000 years.

So the
“…this is that…” refers to
the same Spirit that will work at both times. Peter is merely
calming down
the agitated and confused Jews at Pentecost by saying “Don’t be
alarmed. This
is not an evil spirit. It is God’s Spirit that is working here. It is
the same
Spirit that will work in the future – in the days of Joel. Be
comforted!
Everything is OK.
Peter says “THIS (Spirit at work here
at
Pentecost) IS THAT (Spirit which will work in the last
days
mentioned in Joel).”
