QUESTION:
“Why are there different names in the two accounts of Matthew and Luke
regarding
Christ’s ancestry?”
ANSWER:
1.
Both
lines come out of King David with both Solomon and Nathan being sons of
2.
Joseph has Solomon as an ancestor while Mary has Nathan – both out of
David
3.
Jospeh’s
line Matthew has all the kings
4.
Mary’s line in Luke has the names of ‘ordinary’ people if you will
5.
Matthew’s account comes through the physical line of kings ending with
Joseph, while Luke’s account has
Mary’s
physical ancestors.

Joseph’s
line gets cut off,
but Mary’s line continues.
Christ
does not come from the regal line of kings as such, but the natural
biological line that ends up with Mary.
JOSEPH “Thus saith
the LORD, Write ye this man (Coniah, Jechoniah,
Jehoichin, Jechonias) childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for NO
MAN OF HIS SEED shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David,
and ruling any more in Judah.” (Jer 22:30) Now Joseph
a physical son of Coniah (Matt 1:12) therefore Jesus was not
the son of Joseph – as no descendant of Jospeh will sit on David’s
throne. |
MARY Mary ‘made of the seed of David’ (Lk 3:23-31) Jesus Christ ‘made of a woman’ (Gal 4:4) therefore Jesus Christ is made of seed of David (Rom 1:3) Joseph and his mother (Matt 2:13) Joseph is never mentioned as father. But Jospeh was
supposed to be Christ’s father “… as was supposed…” (Lk 3:23) |
