“WHAT IS A COULTER?”
“But
all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man
his share,
and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.” (1 Samuel 13:20)
Dear
Reader, here is the word ‘coulter’ … mentioned once in the
Bible … and
it throws the Bible Correctors into a spasm … being a so called ‘hard’
word
that should be replaced by an easier word.
However,
having limited knowledge of the English language, these Bible Haters do
not
realize that a coulter is used in modern day agriculture
… from
the Latin ‘culter’ meaning ‘knife’ … a cutter.
In
the old testament, a coulter was was a knife that went before
the
plowshare … in order to first break up the earth for easier
plowing.
Today,
it is a heavy duty, circular shaped, metal cutting wheel,
attached on the front of a plow … cutting vertically into the
hard
ground.
It
is a huge money earning business.
A
coulter breaks up the hard earth, and made it much easier for
the
pointed end of a plow to move through the earth … so the share that
follows can
overturn the earth more efficiently and easily.
Furthermore,
the definition of ‘share’ (1 Samuel 13:20) is to separate
and distribute
…as in the common understanding of the word ‘sharing’. When applied
agriculturally, the share implement is attached to the plow after the
coulter, and
being of triangular shape, distributes or shares the
earth to
either side, that had been disturbed by the coulter.
Now
you would have seen coulters on TV agricultural shows, whereby huge
agricultural machines would have two or three rows, or so, of twelve
abreast coulters
… being heavy duty, circular shaped, metal cutting wheel
…
attached on the front.
Now
these cutting wheels can be lowered or raised depending on the type of
ground
they are cutting through.
If
you didn’t know all this, you could still guess that a coulter would be
some
sort of agricultural tool … being associated with the words of
“share”,
“mattock” and axe.
So
far from being an obscure ‘archaic’ term, it is a current
agricultural term.
Although
the coulter’s form has changed from a long blade or knife in
front of
the plough in the old testament, its function has remained the same.
But
the fault of modern education has been to water down English terms and
labels
to the consistency of mushy baby porridge, so as not to
discourage
children going to school and having fun.
But
as we know, it’s the adults that hate studying, because children
love
to study … especially the Bible.
It’s
the adults that hate the King James Bible.
As
we know, it is the Word, Jesus Christ, that has written the words for
little
children to learn.
They
love Mum and Dad speaking to them in words … words are comforting,
as the
ear is very close to the brain.
Children are born to learn words
… God
has wired them to words … they have an inbuilt desire from the Creator
to learn
the words of the Bible … but instead adults force feed them the big
words of
Harry Potter.
Hello
millstones!
“But
whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in
me, it were
better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and
that he
were drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6)
Sad
isn’t it?
