“PROPHECY AND THE REFORMED”
Dear Reader, it’s been interesting to have had
conversations with various Calvinists … aka Reformed, Doctrines of
(Dis)Grace …
over time.
Preaching on the street many years ago, a man came up
and offered to give me his complete volume set of Calvin’s Bible
Commentary.
I got it home and discovered that Calvin had not
written a commentary on John’s Book of the Revelation.
“Mmmmm! That’s odd” I thought … yes he couldn’t
understand it because it’s a book of prophecy.
And as I’ve bumped into other Reformed people,
I also found them … clueless … regarding prophecy in
the Bible.
To wit, I asked a Reformed Pastor the other
day, as to whether he believed in the up-coming rapture.
He said “No, we don’t believe it.” Poor bloke I
thought.
I mean, you’d have to be a blind bat … down a coal
mine … at midnight … with dark glasses on … not to see it in the Bible.
Then I heard a Doctrines of Disgrace Pastor, hopelessly
attempt to take his congregation though Nebuchadnezzar’s “great
image” (Daniel
2:31).
Talk about a threshing machine operating on the
word of God … in one side went the Bible … and out the other … came
very fine
bits of paper.
Yes Dear Reader, he had completely destroyed the
prophecy contained therein … like a two year old in a high chair …
eating? …
more like destroying a meal … you know … throwing it around the room …
a big
plate of spaghetti liberally doused in tomato sauce.
Man! What a pigs breakfast!
This pastor was like a high wire act … twisting,
contorting and spiralling out of control … and then … not
hitting the
safety net.
Another Presbyterian man with a bright legal
mind said he hadn’t made up his mind about the rapture … and prophecy
in
general.
So adding two and two, we have to say “How, when,
where and why did the Calvinists, Doctrines of (Dis)Grace and the
Reformed, dismember
themselves, when it came to prophecy?
Ever heard the phrases “Like father like son” or “The
apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”?
Well, Calvin is their Daddy (and Mummy) … and they
haven’t cut the umbilical cord.
And that is the gaping hole of understanding, that has
been passed down from Calvin … absolutely clueless about prophecy.
But wait there’s more!
Calvin’s roots are firmly entrenched in Roman Catholicism … not
wanting the physical return of the Lord Jesus Christ in Revelation
chapter
nineteen.
Prophecy to the Catholic is like drinking a glass full
of a car’s radiator water.
As one commentator said “The Calvinist, Doctrines of
Grace, Reformed … shall remain prophetless … and therefore profitless.”
