“THE BOY
IN THE WELL”
QUESTION:
Can keeping the Ten Commandments
save me?
ANSWER: No
A man
went for a walk in the country, and he
heard someone call out for help.
Now the
strange thing was that as he looked
about he couldn’t see anyone.
So he
looked around again and he saw a well,
So he
thought that perhaps someone had fallen
into the well.
He ran
over and when he got to its edge, the
cries for help were loud and clear.
He yelled
out “Who is it? What’s wrong?”
A voice
for the darkness below said “Help me!
Help me!”
The man
said “What happened?” he asked.
A boy
called out “I ran without looking where
I was going. I was looking elsewhere and fell in!”
The man
instantly thought “What an idiot for
not looking where he was running.”
The man
then proceeded to give the boy a good
lecture and started to tell the boy some rules about watching where you
run.
He said
“There are ten rules, which,
if you keep you will never fall into the well again! Number 1 is
“Always keep
your eyes up and looking ahead!”
But the
boy cut him short “Look! It’s not
rules I need. Get me out of here me now, or I’ll drown in this cold
water. I
want you to save me!”
So the man
lowered the winch on top of the
well and said “Grab onto this!”
He brought
him up to the surface but the boy had
nearly drowned.
But he
soon recovered and thanked the man again
and again. He took off home but looked back every now and then to thank
the
man.
So
the man went on his way thinking about what has happened.
He
said to himself “Of course aren’t I an idiot! My rules were wise,
good, just and true, but couldn’t help the boy.
He needed someone
to save him. He didn’t need more rules.”
Laws
are good. Without them society could not function. They help to
maintain law
and order. But the law has penalties - fines or jail.
Now
God has laws too but if you break them (called
sin) he will cast you into hell to burn in the literal flames. Just one
sin will
do as the Bible says For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and
yet offend
in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:10). You
must be
perfect.
But
God’s laws are “…holy, and the
commandment holy, and just, and good.” (Rom 7:12) they can’t save you! In
fact, it’s the opposite! They put people under a
curse to be perfect, and that is impossible. (Rom 3:23)
However
“… the law was our schoolmaster
to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified
by faith.” Gal
3:24
The law shows us how sinful we are, so we
must flee
to Christ as he kept them perfectly on our behalf. He will save you!
As the Bible says “…Christ hath
redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” (Gal 3:13)
While we were yet law breakers, Christ
paid the fine.
He can save you from hell. He is your only hope.
